Ternium is developing a US$4 billion project in Pesquería, Nuevo León, whose main component is a new steel mill with capacity for 2.6 million tonnes of steel per year.
In February 2026 the steelmaker started two more lines within the third expansion stage of its Industrial Center: cold rolling and galvanizing. These are the processes that turn steel into the sheet used by automakers, and bringing them online moves the complex closer to operating end to end inside the state.
Why this project is not just volume
What sets this mill apart is not tonnage but how it will produce. According to the company's own statements, the plant will feature:
- 50% renewable energy consumption.
- Capacity to capture 50% of the CO₂ emitted in its processes.
- A system prepared to run on 100% green hydrogen.
That last point carries the most weight going forward. Steel produced with green hydrogen enters without friction into supply chains now subject to carbon footprint requirements, starting with the European and North American auto industries.
What it means for the state's supply chain
Automotive sheet is the entry input for much of the industry installed in Nuevo León. Rolling and galvanizing it here shortens the chain for automakers and for the Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers across the metro area and the Pesquería corridor.
For a company evaluating a move, the relevant fact is logistical: flat steel stops being an input that has to be trucked in from far away.
